20 Year Hiatus…Doneski!

I had the pleasure of taking my Dad to the movies on Sunday morning.  Doesn’t seem that shocking right?  Wrong.  My Daddy-o has not been to a movie theater in 20 years.  I’m not even exaggerating.  20 years.

Dad wasn’t always theater challenged…

One of my favorite memories growing up was “helping” my Dad on Saturdays.  We’d go grocery shopping, do housework…and sometimes, he’d have “errands” to run.  We’d jump in the car, and he’d drive around town pretending that he had to pick something up at the mall…and eventually we’d magically show up at the movie theater.  It was my favorite surprise…and one that I have passed on.  I love to “run errands” and suddenly show up at a movie theater with my daughter…  Seeing her pleasure and surprise in the unexpected fun… I love it!

Back to my Dad…well, I drove him around running “errands,” and showed up at Sundance cinema.  It was perfect, and I had no argument.  I had reserved seats…which meant…no feet kicking the chair from behind.  We laughed and enjoyed “Holmes,” sharing a bag of fresh buttery popcorn and … well the only difference was that now instead of a Pepsi, I enjoyed sipping on a large black coffee.

“Holmes” was the perfect choice…my Dad is a Sherlock Holmes addict.  If any movie would have him willing to put aside his theater anxiety…well, this was it.  I loved listening to him as he picked up on each clue, and tried to work out who the villains were.  How the crime was going to be solved.  My Dad kept leaning over and saying…that’s foreshadowing, that’s important, remember that scene…on and on.  It was bringing me back to my high school film studies class.  Roooooosebud……

“Holmes” by the way was a marvelous movie, in my book not to be missed.  Robert Downey Jr. may be the real-life handful…however he certainly is an acting force perfected!  I’m no movie critic, but…”Holmes” had me on the edge of my seat, laughing and just amazed at the creativity in the scenery and costumes.  Besides that…I think a movie is great if it’s 2 hours long and I feel like only 15 minutes passed…and I’m annoyed at leaving the theater because I WANT MORE.

Hugs and Smoochies

  1. I love how your dad would bring you to the movies. I have great memories of my dad and I going to the movies. One of my strongest memories is when we didn’t want anyone sitting in front of us, he’d drape our coats over the seats and tell people someone threw up there. Hahaha. That’s my dad.
